With a pair of businesses and seven beautiful children, married entrepreneurs Caleb and Shayna Chaney are busier than they might seem. And, right now, that’s the sweet spot.

The couple own Chaney Construction in Mariposa and All Weather Supply Co. in Oakhurst, located at 40148 Enterprise Drive in the Enterprise Center near Highway 49. They are open Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

All Weather Supply Co. sells roofing, drywall, insulation, and various specialty items, like custom fireproof vents. Roofing in general and metal roofing in particular are sectors that have really taken off during the pandemic, and have grown in the face of a demand for fireproof materials in the west.

“There’s been a huge explosion in metal roofing and siding,” said Shayna Chaney, a 39-year-old self-proclaimed “roofing nerd.”

Shayna runs the business in Oakhurst while her husband Caleb is out in the field with his crew of six to eight men, or working in Mariposa’s warehouses. The couple met in Grace Church’s youth group and were the first of their friends to marry, aged 18.

They have seven children: Claire (18), Samuel (15), Joy (14), Micah (12), Eliana (10), Lacey (7) and Joshua (4). While Claire lives alone, the younger Chaneys are homeschooled with the help of Shayna’s parents, retired Mariposa educators Bob and Connie Collins.

Bob and Connie also help with business when the need arises. Caleb’s parents, Craig and Darlene Chaney, currently live out of state, but Caleb started his own contract under his father’s watch.

While Shayna says she loves the puzzle-like nature of putting all the roofing components together for their clientele, part of what she loves most about the family’s business adventures is working with her husband and to have children around.

Today, their eldest son, Samuel, works part-time in the business to “gain real-life experience” and carry on the family tradition. That’s good, because Caleb has some ideas. Still.

“Caleb is a visionary,” Shayna said. “He never stops thinking and planning.” And she’s there to take care of the many details. “Our personalities work perfectly together.”

Each of the Chaneys is the eldest of their large original families, so a large number of children was natural for newlyweds at the time. As their young offspring grew, the Chaneys separated from Mariposa and moved first to Southern California, then to Hawaii, to do missionary work.

“We carried the kids and did everything together, everywhere,” Shayna recalls.

Despite its benefits, those who live in a tropical paradise are sometimes prone to “island fever,” and once that set in, it was time to head back to the United States.

“Imagine having a claustrophobic husband when you have a big family on a small island,” Shayna laughed.

But it was in Hawaii that Shayna and Caleb took a personality test that she says ‘was like an owner’s manual’ when it came to understanding her husband, his thought process and his plan of action. .

The Chaneys recovered in Mariposa where Caleb branched out and added a roofing contractor to his resume. And then, nearly three years ago, they bought All Weather Supply in Oakhurst and have continued to grow their family business ever since.

“Roofing has changed so much over the past 30 years that most homeowners aren’t aware of the options available to them,” Caleb said. “Metal is the future of roofing, both more economical in the long term and recyclable. Most homeowners are unaware that there are metal roof options that cost very nearly the same as shingles.

Part of what sets All Weather apart from the competition is the company’s ability to get products out quickly and make them affordable. They purchase the metal coils in a wide variety of colors and profiles and Chaney Construction then creates the panels for the roofing and cladding right here in the foothills.

“Being able to fabricate panels on site means our customers have more time to input their measurements,” Caleb explained. “It also gives them access to the manufacturer itself instead of dealing with the sales team and accounting team of a large company. We can troubleshoot and advise locally.

Because his small businesses don’t have the excessive overhead of a large company, Caleb said they can offer lower prices for nearly identical products.

“And our turnaround time is less than half of a large company.”

Helping homeowners get their products quickly can sometimes help them keep their home insurance, Caleb added.

“It’s great to be able to help people out of a difficult situation.”

The couple themselves are dealing with the usual business challenges, equipment shortages (they protect themselves by keeping stocks ready to go) and rising costs with staff changes.

Shayna is currently with All Weather full time and while she enjoys getting to know customers and helping them find what they need, she would also love to educate their children full time.

In the meantime, the young Chaneys flourish on a daily basis, surrounded by a hectic family and committed to the family business. Even their dogs are busy. They know they have good and want to share it with the community.

“The best part of our business is seeing our customers succeed in what they do,” Caleb said.

“It’s really tough for entrepreneurs right now and the demand for their services is outstripping their time. If we can make it easier for them to focus on the work and not the materials, then we’re both winners. »
